A disturbing incident unfolded on May 21 in Rehra village, Siddharthnagar district, Uttar Pradesh, where a 28-year-old man, Lalji Gautam, was allegedly tied to a cot and set on fire by his wife and her lover. The motive appears to stem from an illicit relationship the wife, Pooja Gautam, was maintaining with a man named Firoz. For nearly two years, Firoz had been visiting the Gautam household under the guise of being Pooja's brother-in-law to conceal their affair.
Tensions reportedly escalated on May 21 when Lalji Gautam discovered Firoz's true identity and relationship with his wife. Later that night, while Lalji Gautam was asleep, Pooja and Firoz allegedly bound him to a cot, doused him with a flammable substance, and ignited the flames. Hearing his screams, family members intervened, managing to extinguish the fire, but Lalji Gautam had already suffered severe burn injuries.
He is currently undergoing treatment at a medical college in Basti, where his condition is described as critical. A case has been registered against Pooja and Firoz based on a complaint filed by Lalji Gautam's father. The two accused were apprehended on Tuesday at a local bus stop and subsequently placed in judicial custody.
