In April 2020, David Fouts was discovered deceased in a Hamilton County, Indiana ditch. Investigators noted duct tape residue on his wrists and ankles, initially struggling to ascertain a cause of death. A breakthrough came with the autopsy, which revealed the presence of deadly lyophyllum connatum mushrooms in his stomach.
Five months after the discovery, David's wife, Katrina Fouts, and family friend Terry Hopkins were arrested. Suspicion fell on Katrina due to suspicious internet searches related to murder and unfounded accusations against her husband. Hopkins confessed to the crime before his death in February 2022.
Katrina Fouts' trial concluded in March 2022. While acquitted of murder, she was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and failure to report human remains. In April 2022, she received a 34-year prison sentence and is currently serving time at the Indiana Women's Prison, with an expected release in 2046.
