Texas Woman Charged in Husband's 22-Year-Old Murder
24 Dec
Summary
- Wife arrested on the 22nd anniversary of husband's death.
- Allegedly hired an ex-employee to commit the murder for money.
- Life insurance policies totaling nearly $400,000 were discovered.

Jody Johnston, now 51, was arrested on December 22nd, precisely 22 years after her husband, Jerry Don Humphrey, was found murdered in their home. Humphrey, who co-owned a vehicle repossession business with Johnston, was shot three times in the head. The Stafford Police Department announced Johnston's arrest for capital murder.
Authorities allege that in 2003, Johnston paid an individual, identified as Angel Amescua Jr., or another unknown person to kill her husband. Amescua Jr., a former employee fired by Humphrey, was arrested in March 2020 and has pleaded not guilty. His trial is scheduled for April 7, 2026.
An investigation revealed four life insurance policies totaling nearly $400,000 naming Johnston as the beneficiary, contradicting her initial statement to authorities about the absence of significant policies. Her father had discovered Humphrey's body after Johnston asked him to wake him. Johnston is scheduled to appear in court on February 2, 2026.
