- Accused allegedly drove Chavan to suicide due to mental stress.
A case of abetment to suicide has been registered following the suspicious death of 26-year-old Vaibhav Chavan. Chavan was a whistleblower who had exposed an alleged racket involving fake sports certificates used for police recruitment. He was found hanging near Jyotiba temple in the Imamapur area.
His brother, Ganesh Chavan, filed a complaint against representatives of the Kurash Association and Nagnath Sable, who allegedly used a fake sports certificate to secure a police job despite having similar marks to Vaibhav. Chavan had pursued the matter diligently through complaints to the state sports commissionerate and RTI applications.
Vaibhav's efforts led to the exposure of the racket, resulting in criminal cases against association office-bearers and the suspension of 14 police and sports officials. His family alleges that he faced threats and constant mental stress, contributing to his death.
Police have registered the FIR under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and are investigating the death, with two teams deployed for the inquiry. A suicide note has reportedly been found.
