A recent incident in Gurugram saw a young man arrested for allegedly conning a student out of Rs. 24.60 lakhs. The accused, Alok K., was reportedly inspired by the antagonist played by Vikrant Massey in the web series Pritam And Pedro. Alok posed as a student counsellor, building trust with a 21-year-old student by assisting with his MBA admission formalities earlier this year.
The fraud escalated when Alok allegedly warned the student about a fabricated copying detection alert during an online exam. He then demanded a substantial sum of money, promising to resolve the issue and even offering refunds. The student transferred Rs. 24.60 lakhs in installments, receiving only Rs. 1.15 lakhs back before realizing he had been scammed.
Following the student's complaint, police traced Alok's phone records and financial trail to Gurugram, leading to his arrest on September 11. Alok, who previously worked for a call center handling student admissions for the institute, used the victim's contact details from the database. He confessed that the Pritam And Pedro antagonist inspired his method of social engineering and impersonation.
