Burglar Evades Capture Using Blurred Waymo Footage

In January, a burglar utilized a Waymo autonomous vehicle during a theft of yoga clothes in San Francisco. Despite an ongoing investigation, the suspect remains at large. This incident has highlighted limitations in Waymo's data retrieval for law enforcement purposes. Police obtained a search warrant in April, but by then, ride footage captured by the Waymo was reportedly no longer stored. Furthermore, exterior camera footage provided by Waymo had been blurred for privacy reasons, preventing identification of the perpetrator. The vehicle was used to travel to and from a yoga studio where the clothes were taken, as evidenced by the studio's own security footage. However, the account information Waymo shared with police did not assist in locating the suspect. This case raises questions about the effectiveness of robotaxi data in criminal investigations when privacy measures are in place.
