A new safety app, WalkSafe, has been launched in Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme, aiming to provide enhanced protection for individuals out at night. The free application facilitates sharing of live location data with pre-selected trusted contacts.
WalkSafe also offers a feature for planning journeys and includes access to a UK-wide map identifying accredited safe spaces. This initiative aims to equip people with essential tools for making safer decisions and maintaining connections with friends and family.
The app's development was influenced by personal experiences with unwanted attention and a growing awareness of the need for greater safety measures, particularly after becoming a mother. Research shows a majority of women consider their safety when traveling from nightlife venues and are more likely to patronize places with visible safety provisions.
The rollout in Staffordshire is a collaboration between WalkSafe, Staffordshire Police, and local councils. This expansion contributes to WalkSafe's national safety map, now active in over 35 UK locations. Users can also utilize arrival-time check-ins via HomeSafe or activate an SOS feature for immediate alerts to contacts.
