Villagers Attack Ramnagar Police Station in Varanasi Water Dispute

In a recent incident on November 10, 2025, a dispute over drinking water supply in Sultanpur village near Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, led to a violent clash between villagers and the police. The conflict began when supporters of the village head, Ritu Devi, clashed with their rivals, resulting in Ritu Devi's assault. Police arrested four accused after reaching the scene and later detained more suspects in connection with the violence.

Subsequently, a group of villagers reached the Ramnagar police station and started pressuring the cops to release those arrested. When the police refused, the villagers initially started a gherao (siege) of the police station. However, when the police tried to disperse the crowd, the villagers resorted to brick-batting, damaging vehicles of the Ramnagar, Lanka, and Jaitpura station officers. The incident left at least 10 people, including 8 police officers, injured.

To pacify the situation, the police used force and dispersed the protesters. By 1:30 am, 37 accused, including 10 women, were arrested. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Kashi Zone, Gaurav Banswal, stated that the local dispute in Sultanpur village had escalated, leading to the violent clash at the Ramnagar police station.
