Officer Accused of $3M Fraud, Breach of Trust
4 Sep
Summary
- 19 alleged victims lost over $3 million combined.
- Officer faces fraud, theft, and breach of trust charges.
- Investigation spanned two-and-a-half years, internal probe conducted.
Vancouver police officer Kal Dosanjh has been charged with multiple offenses, including fraud, theft, and breach of trust, stemming from an extensive internal investigation. The probe, which commenced in December 2023, identified 19 alleged victims who collectively suffered financial losses exceeding $3 million. Dosanjh, a 26-year veteran and head of the Kids Play Foundation, faces four counts each of fraud and theft over $5,000, along with one count of breach of trust.
Police Chief Steve Rai characterized the allegations as "profoundly troubling" and a detriment to the public's trust in law enforcement. In response to the gravity of the charges, Dosanjh has been suspended immediately, with a recommendation to the Vancouver Police Board for suspension without pay. The internal investigation was chosen due to the significant resources required, with discussions indicating that tasking the B.C. RCMP was not feasible at the time.
