Vadodara Land Grab: Rs 2,400 Cr Prime Property Reclaimed

In a significant move, Vadodara authorities have initiated the reclamation of 41 acres of valuable city land, estimated to be worth nearly Rs 2,400 crore. This action brings to a close one of the city's longest property disputes, which spanned 35 years. The Gujarat High Court recently dismissed a plea by the royal Gaekwad family, affirming the ownership of the Yavateshwar Mahadev Temple Trust.

The extensive demolition drive has already seen the destruction of around 55 commercial structures. These included a resort with 20 rooms, two box cricket grounds, a large swimming pool, and various other establishments. A political party office and newly constructed food stalls were also among the demolished properties.

Collector Anil Dhameliya stated that the court meticulously reviewed all claims and found that judicial decisions since 1971 consistently upheld the temple trust's ownership. The court observed an "unscrupulous desire" by some parties to prolong the litigation indefinitely. Legal verification with the Vadodara Municipal Corporation confirmed that no development permissions were granted for these lands since 1995.

The administration is now focused on securing the reclaimed land. Future plans involve restoring and developing the site, which historically housed a stepwell and heritage structures, in collaboration with the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Ltd and the temple trust, preserving its religious and heritage significance.
