1 May
Summary
- Non-emergency services halted at Central Gujarat hospital due to assault.
- Decomposed body discovery led to alleged attack on medical staff.
- Doctors demand improved security and accountability after Wednesday's incident.

Doctors at Sir Sayajirao General Hospital in Vadodara withdrew non-emergency services on Thursday, April 30, protesting an alleged assault on hospital staff. The incident occurred on Wednesday, April 29, after relatives of Ranjan Vyas, whose body had decomposed in the hospital's morgue, reportedly attacked medical personnel.
The relatives claimed they were handed a severely decomposed body when they arrived from the United States to claim it. Medical Superintendent Dr. R.G. Aiyer suggested a technical fault in the mortuary unit might have caused the decomposition. However, he condemned the subsequent attack on the doctors.
Resident doctors described being verbally abused and physically manhandled, with a female doctor allegedly being dragged. Security was reportedly slow to respond, with police arriving before hospital guards. The protesting doctors are demanding immediate security upgrades and accountability for the perpetrators.
As a result of the protest, work at the hospital's post-mortem department remained suspended on Thursday, with bodies being transferred to another facility for autopsies. Talks are underway between hospital administration and the protesting doctors to resolve the crisis.
