The United States Postal Service (USPS) is highlighting a significant safety concern, reporting over 5,200 dog attacks on postal employees last year. As part of its annual Dog Bite Awareness campaign in June, the agency is urging Americans to take greater precautions to secure their pets during mail deliveries. The USPS emphasizes that even typically calm dogs can exhibit unpredictable behavior when feeling threatened or protective of their territory.
Los Angeles recorded the highest number of reported incidents with 70 attacks, followed by Dallas with 50, Houston with 44, and Chicago with 43. To ensure employee safety, the USPS may temporarily suspend mail delivery in areas with roaming or aggressive dogs. In persistent cases, residents might need to collect their mail from the post office or rent a P.O. box.
