A violent, unprovoked assault has dashed a young man's aspirations of a career as a firefighter. The victim sustained a severe eye injury during the attack, which required several complex surgical procedures for treatment. This incident has profoundly impacted his identity, leaving him no longer the "happy confident person" he once was.
The court heard that the attack occurred after the victim was aggressively approached by the assailant at a bar. Despite the severity of the injury and the victim's statement about losing his "best days," the perpetrator received a sentence of probation. The judge acknowledged the attacker's previous conviction for affray but opted against jail time, fearing it could incite further violence.
Recorder Toby Hedworth KC rejected the attacker's claim of no recollection, deeming the violence "quite gratuitous." He urged the perpetrator to be "utterly ashamed" but stated the public would benefit more from him working with the probation service to understand his actions. The victim expressed deep frustration that his attacker could "carry on with his life" while his own future was jeopardized.
