20 Nov, 2025
Summary
- Ulfa-I ex-deputy commander Dristi Rajkhowa received bail in a three-decade-old case.
- The case involves the 1993 abduction of a railway contractor and his driver.
- Rajkhowa rejoined mainstream society in 2023 and appeared in court recently.
Dristi Rajkhowa, formerly the deputy commander-in-chief of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (Ulfa-I), has been granted bail by a TADA court. The bail is in relation to a kidnapping case that dates back thirty years, specifically to December 31, 1993. Rajkhowa, who rejoined mainstream society in 2023, was the second-in-command to Ulfa-I chief Paresh Baruah.
The case involves the alleged abduction of railway contractor Kanailal Gupta and his driver, Gautam Chatterjee, at gunpoint. A complaint was filed by Kanailal's brother, leading to a charge sheet against several individuals, including Rajkhowa, who was then known as Monoj Kumar Rabha. Despite the repeal of the TADA act in 1995, old cases under it continue to be tried.
Rajkhowa appeared before the designated court on November 17, 2025, seeking to recall an arrest warrant and requesting bail. His legal counsel argued that Rajkhowa had integrated back into society and was unaware of court summons. After considering the arguments, the court granted bail, permitting the case to move towards a trial.
