Retailers Fight Brazen Shop Theft Surge

Retailers are urging the government and the Mayor of London to take immediate action against escalating crime in British shops. Marks and Spencer has warned that theft and violence are becoming more brazen, organized, and aggressive, impacting high street businesses. This call follows recent public disturbances involving large groups of teenagers in London shops, which included alleged shoplifting.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, both shoplifting and verbal/physical abuse against retail workers have surged. Companies are now spending substantial amounts on enhanced store security, specialized packaging, and advanced technology like facial recognition. M&S alone invested tens of millions of pounds in the past year to safeguard its stores and employees.

However, M&S has stated that these investments are insufficient without government intervention. The retailer is advocating for a more robust and consistent police response, emphasizing the need for tools to effectively target repeat offenders and crime hotspots. Greater transparency regarding shoplifting incidents is also crucial to accurately assess the problem's true scale and impact.

The British Retail Consortium estimates the industry spent almost £1bn on security in the past year and over £5.5bn since the pandemic. The number of detected shoplifting incidents reportedly fell significantly between 2023-24 and 2024-25. In response, the government is revising rules that previously treated thefts under £200 less seriously.

Law enforcement agencies report making progress. The Metropolitan Police stated they solved nearly double the number of shoplifting cases last year and arrested almost 50% more suspects. The Mayor of London's office expressed support for targeted approaches to tackle prolific shoplifters and committed to continued efforts to enhance safety in London.
