16 Mar
Summary
- Tampering with energy meters is illegal and dangerous.
- Energy theft costs consumers over £1.4 billion annually.
- Penalties include fines and up to five years in prison.

The energy regulator, Ofgem, is reminding UK households about the severe risks associated with tampering with utility meters. This illegal activity is described as both dangerous and a significant cause of fatalities, with reports indicating one death every 10 days in the UK linked to meter tampering.
Tampering with gas meters can lead to dangerous gas leaks, causing issues such as breathing problems, unconsciousness, fires, and explosions. Similarly, tampering with electricity meters can result in overheating, malfunctions, electric shocks, burns, and fires. Smart meters typically possess security features that can detect and report unauthorized interference.
Beyond the immediate physical dangers, energy theft through meter tampering results in substantial financial losses for all energy consumers in Great Britain, amounting to over £1.4 billion annually. Ofgem urges caution regarding individuals offering to reduce energy bills by altering meters.
Those found guilty of energy theft face serious legal repercussions, including hefty fines and possible imprisonment for up to five years. In a notable case from October 2022, a UK individual was sentenced to 15 years for manslaughter due to a gas explosion caused by meter tampering, which tragically resulted in the death of a two-year-old child.
