Knife Deaths: Average Age 14, Deep Deprivation Link
21 Apr
Summary
- Average victim age in fatal knife attacks is 14.
- Children in deprived areas are seven times more likely victims.
- Black children are 13 times more likely to be stabbed to death.

New research indicates that the average age of children fatally stabbed in England is 14, with a significant majority of victims being male. Children residing in the most deprived areas face a seven-fold increased risk of succumbing to knife violence compared to those in affluent regions.
The study, analyzing deaths between 2019 and 2024, found that Black children are disproportionately affected, being 13 times more likely to be victims of fatal stabbings than their White counterparts. A substantial number of these young victims, three-quarters, were already known to social services, and many had experienced domestic abuse.
Overall, 145 children under 18 died from knife wounds during the examined period, with the death rate escalating from 2021. While overall knife-related crime saw a drop in the year leading up to June 2024, the crisis continues to claim young lives, particularly in urban centers like London and the West Midlands.
Experts emphasize that enforcement alone is insufficient, pointing to deep-rooted issues of racial inequality, deprivation, and trauma as driving factors. Early intervention and targeted support for children experiencing adversity, including domestic violence and mental health concerns, are crucial to prevent further tragedies.
