Court Bans Meta Glasses: Spyware Fears Rise
11 Aug
Summary
- UK courts will confiscate Meta glasses upon entry.
- Bans aim to prevent surreptitious recording of proceedings.
- Similar bans exist in restaurants, theaters, and pubs.

His Majesty's Courts and Tribunal Service (CTS) in England and Wales has implemented a ban on Meta smart glasses, confiscating them from individuals entering judicial buildings. This decision aligns with existing restrictions on recording within courts and tribunals, where unauthorized image or video capture is prohibited and can lead to contempt of court charges.
While smartphones are permitted under the condition they are not used for recording, no exceptions are made for smart glasses. This proactive measure follows a case in New York where similar glasses were banned to prevent surreptitious recording.
Concerns over Meta glasses being used to film individuals without consent have also led to bans in various UK establishments, including restaurants and pubs, with some labeling them "pervert glasses." The CTS does not maintain data on the frequency of smart glasses being used or brought into courts.
