A Chicago woman has expressed her profound grief and confusion following the death of her boyfriend, Daniel Figueroa, 28. Figueroa was killed on Monday morning during an attempted car theft while completing his final Uber Eats delivery. He was found unresponsive on West Flournoy Street in the Austin neighborhood, near Loretto Hospital, around 2:05 AM.
According to police sources, three suspects attempted to steal Figueroa's van. Surveillance footage reportedly shows the individuals dragging Figueroa for about half a block as he tried to enter his car before fleeing the scene. Figueroa had reportedly just finished his shift at Amazon and was working extra hours for Uber Eats to support his family.
Authorities launched a homicide investigation and, later that same afternoon, took a person of interest into custody. The stolen van was also recovered with a woman found behind the wheel. Figueroa's father described his son as a hardworking, devoted family man who loved helping others. A GoFundMe page has been established to help with funeral expenses and financial burdens left by his passing.
