Uber Driver Becomes Unlikely Getaway Driver for Police

In Houston, an Uber driver's late-night shift took an extraordinary turn when police officers unexpectedly commandeered his vehicle to aid in a pursuit. The driver, Anthony Baines, was en route to pick up a passenger shortly after midnight on August 8 when a shirtless man sprinted across the street, pursued by two Houston Police Department officers.

One officer entered Baines's car, urgently requesting a ride to follow the fleeing suspect. Baines complied, driving a short distance before stopping to pick up the second officer. The officers then resumed their foot chase upon spotting the suspect again. Baines expressed shock and surprise at the surreal experience, stating he acted on adrenaline and complied with officers' commands.

Houston police confirmed the incident, stating the suspect was initially sought for allegedly threatening a woman and her children. Although the officers received an unexpected assist from Baines, the suspect was not located. A police union official later clarified that civilians are not obligated to assist officers in such situations and can decline requests.
