Tycoon's Lawyers Block Inquest into 5 Deaths

Property tycoon Bill Swale has engaged two prominent barristers to resist cooperating with a coronial inquest investigating a fatal incident. Swale was previously charged after his vehicle struck pedestrians outside a hotel, resulting in five deaths. The charges were later dismissed due to insufficient evidence for a strong conviction.

Swale appeared in court to explain his refusal to assist the ongoing inquiry. Although he initially indicated willingness to cooperate, his legal team quickly clarified his objection stems from a fear of self-incrimination. He believes honest answers could still lead to prosecution, despite assurances of legal protection.

The inquest seeks to understand Swale's actions and health management leading up to the November 2023 tragedy. Barristers argue that expert testimony and existing evidence are sufficient for the inquest to proceed without his direct input, while prosecutors have previously stated no future charges would be filed.
