In May 2003, Juan Catalan attended a Los Angeles Dodgers baseball game, an event that would later prove pivotal in his life. Unbeknownst to him at the time, a television crew was filming in his section of the stadium. Several months later, Catalan was arrested in front of his family and charged with the murder of a 16-year-old girl, a crime carrying the death penalty.
Catalan maintained his innocence, asserting he was at the baseball game during the time of the murder. His lawyer, Todd Melnik, identified the TV show as HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm." Although the initially viewed tapes placed Catalan at the game before the murder, they were filmed too early to fully exonerate him.
Further investigation by Melnik eventually uncovered crucial evidence in the form of cell tower records. These records definitively proved that Catalan could not have been at the crime scene when the murder occurred. Consequently, the charges against him were dismissed, and Juan Catalan has since recounted his ordeal in a memoir titled 'Played.'
