Law enforcement apprehended a traveler at Tampa International Airport (TPA) after discovering a concealed weapon within a baseball bat-shaped flashlight. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers identified the item, which featured a knife integrated into its handle, hidden within the lining of the passenger's carry-on bag.
The discovery was made by TSA Officer Andrew Carter, who alerted Supervisory TSA Officer Michael Slaughter. Slaughter, with extensive experience, examined the unusual object and found the 4-inch double-edged knife. Initially, the passenger claimed ignorance, but later confessed to concealing the item to save space.
While some passengers are allowed to surrender knives and continue their journey, this individual was arrested and prevented from traveling. According to Steven Jacaruso, Acting TPA TSA Deputy Assistant Federal Security for Screening, law enforcement decisions depend on the specific circumstances. Passengers found with prohibited items, like knives, in checked bags must ensure they are sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent injury. Violations can result in civil penalties of up to $17,062 per person.
