30 Jul
Summary
- FIR registered 18 months after a 9-year-old girl's death.
- Accused doctor faces charges for negligent treatment and medication.
- Agitators demand inclusion of health officials and ITDP employees.

Eighteen months after the death of 9-year-old Khushbu Namdev Thakare, an FIR was filed on July 28, 2026, against a former medical officer. The class IV student from a government ashram school in Raigad allegedly suffered an adverse reaction to leprosy medication administered at a primary health center in Pen taluka on January 22, 2025. The FIR charges the doctor with causing death by negligent act.
Khushbu's father, Namdev Thakare, along with activists, initiated a hunger strike demanding the inclusion of other health and Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) officials. They allege Khushbu was wrongly diagnosed and treated without consent, leading to kidney damage and her eventual demise. Reports indicate she did not have leprosy, as later confirmed by doctors at MGM hospital.
The FIR details Khushbu's screening in July 2024 and diagnosis under the Kusum campaign on December 16, 2024. She began multidrug treatment on December 18, 2024. By January 3, 2026, she developed a high fever and liver cell damage, which a medical committee report confirmed should have prompted immediate discontinuation of Dapsone. She passed away on January 22, 2025, during treatment at MGM hospital.
