According to the victim's brother, Rudy Rios, de Velasquez and her husband were heading to a private residence to clean the home when the incident occurred. De Velasquez tried to open the door using a key, but was promptly shot in the head by the homeowner. She then "fell into the arms of her husband," Rios said.
An autopsy performed on de Velasquez's body ruled her manner of death as a homicide due to the gunshot wound to the head. However, the classification does not necessarily mean the shooter will face criminal charges, as the authorities are still investigating the incident.

The Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department has confirmed that the facts gathered do not support a residential entry, and neither de Velasquez nor her husband were inside the home when the shooting occurred. The shooter has not been publicly identified, and the investigation remains ongoing.
