On September 29, 2025, authorities in Mississippi and Alabama are investigating the tragic deaths of a mother and daughter who went missing earlier this month. Shardee McGill, 32, and her 3-year-old daughter Janae were reported missing on September 22 by Shardee's husband and Janae's father, Johnathan McGill.
The pair had left their home in northeast Jackson, Mississippi, on the evening of September 21 and never returned. Their car was later recovered in Epes, Alabama, about 130 miles from their residence. Tragically, Shardee's body was found in a shallow body of water off the Tombigbee River on September 25, while Janae's body was discovered the following day, not far from where her mother was found.
Hinds County Sheriff and Interim Jackson Police Chief Tyree Jones stated that the deaths are being treated as "suspicious," and the causes of death have not yet been made public. Johnathan McGill was briefly detained for questioning but was later released by authorities, who say they do not have any clear suspects at this time.
The investigation into this heartbreaking case is ongoing, and officials are urging anyone with information to come forward and contact the Jackson Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
