Tradie's AirPods Lead Cops to Thieves' Lair
9 Mar
Summary
- Victim used Find My app to locate stolen AirPods and thieves' location.
- Police have not yet recovered the stolen items despite precise location.
- Thefts from cars have increased significantly in Melbourne's west.

A young tradesman in Werribee, Melbourne, recently had his AirPods stolen from his ute. Using the Find My app, he successfully tracked the stolen AirPods to a nearby address, effectively locating the thieves' suspected hideout.
Despite providing this crucial information to Victoria Police, the tradie reported that officers asked him to "sit tight" and that they would "deal with it," but no immediate action was taken. He claimed to have waited for days while police continued their "investigation."
This incident occurs amidst a significant rise in vehicle thefts across Melbourne's west. In the Wyndham municipality alone, theft from vehicles saw a 34 percent increase. Legally, police require reasonable grounds and often a warrant to search a property, even with location data, which can create a disconnect for victims.
The tradie, an apprentice carpenter, had previously experienced a much larger theft of over $10,000 worth of tools from his ute. He had to purchase new gear and was particularly upset about the theft of his soccer boots, valued at $300, which he needed for an upcoming game.
