An American tourist was detained by local security in Bali for violating Nyepi, the island's annual Day of Silence. Karl Adolf Amrhein, 57, was found walking on a main road in Sukawati village on March 19th, during the strict 24-hour observance which prohibits all outdoor activity. Police officers stated that Amrhein initially pretended to be mute when questioned.
Amrhein eventually explained that he was searching for new accommodation after being asked to leave his hotel in Ubud due to an expired stay. He was then escorted to a nearby villa and permitted to stay for the remainder of Nyepi, which ran from 6 a.m. on March 19th to 6 a.m. on March 20th. This observance marks the Balinese New Year and is rooted in Balinese Hinduism, requiring adherence to principles like prohibiting travel and public activity.
Nyepi is a significant spiritual observance for the island's population, dedicated to reflection and self-purification. During this period, all businesses are closed, roads are empty except for emergency vehicles, and flights are suspended. Local guards, known as Pecalang, enforce the rules, which apply to both residents and visitors. Hotels typically brief guests on regulations in advance.
