A 16th-century monument in Florence, Italy, has sustained damage estimated at 5,000 euros ($5,845) due to the actions of a tourist during a bachelorette party. The 28-year-old woman climbed the renowned Fountain of Neptune in Piazza della Signoria on a Saturday.
Authorities reported that the woman ascended the fountain by climbing over a railing and the basin's edge, then onto the legs of a horse statue. Her stated intention was to touch the statue's private parts as a pre-wedding challenge. Police immediately intervened and instructed her to exit the fountain.
Investigators determined that the woman caused minor but significant damage to the horses' legs and a frieze she gripped to maintain balance. She has been reported to the Judicial Authority for defacing an artistic and architectural asset. Florence has experienced similar incidents, including a German tourist damaging the statue in 2023 and a broken hand in 2005, prompting the installation of security cameras.
