- Banned tobacco products were sold for years undisturbed.
- UPI transactions revealed regular payments to police.
In Tiruvarur district, two head constables, Bharathiraja and Manoharan, have been suspended by Superintendent V Satish Kumar. This action follows revelations that they allegedly accepted bribes from a local tobacco seller named Baskar.
For several years, Baskar's shop in Athikkadai near Kudavasal was reportedly selling banned tobacco products. Investigations led by Deputy Superintendent N Muthukumaran uncovered multiple UPI transactions. These transactions indicated regular payments from Baskar to the two constables, suggesting they were facilitating the illegal sales.
Furthermore, Muthukumaran’s report highlighted suspicious large money transfers from Baskar's account to a food safety official. The SP has recommended action against this official, forwarding the matter to the district collector.
