Auto Driver Foils Escape, Returns Fugitive to Jail
27 Oct
Summary
- An auto driver returned a physically disabled escaped inmate to jail.
- The inmate escaped Theni sub-jail and hid in a government building overnight.
- Prasath planned to confront his family about their lack of visits.
An escaped inmate's bid for freedom was cut short by a vigilant auto-rickshaw driver in Theni. Linga Prasath, who was awaiting trial for a ganja-peddling case, had escaped from the Theni sub-jail. He spent the night hiding in a government building near the facility.
Prasath, hampered by a physical disability, waited until dawn to reach the main road. He then boarded a share-auto. However, a constable alerted the driver, Chinna Kalai, who realized Prasath was one of the 17 remand prisoners who had escaped. Kalai prevented Prasath from fleeing again and drove him directly back to the sub-jail.
A local tea shop owner had also seen Prasath but mistakenly believed he was out on parole. Authorities reported that Prasath's original plan was to reach Theni, meet his family, and question them about their failure to visit him during his ten months in custody.
