- Thallium, a toxic metal, can mimic natural death, experts say.

A woman has accused a former employee of poisoning her family with thallium, a colorless, odorless, and highly toxic heavy metal. The alleged incident occurred in December 2025 when the woman prepared 'panjiri,' a sweet, for her daughter's childbirth in Germany. The employee, who had gained her trust, allegedly assisted in preparation and packaging.
Upon arrival in Germany on December 9, 2025, the woman shared the sweet with her daughter and later with other family members after her daughter delivered a baby on January 1, 2026. Soon after, several family members experienced severe health issues. Tragically, her daughter's condition worsened, and her daughter's mother-in-law was hospitalized, with tests in Delhi detecting thallium in her blood.
Tests conducted in Germany on the woman, her daughter, and her newborn grandchild also reportedly detected thallium. The woman claims her granddaughter was affected even after breastfeeding for only one day. Upon returning to India on January 17, 2026, for medical treatment, she discovered the employee had vanished, raising suspicions. Police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
