Hours after achieving a state football championship, an 18-year-old player from Dallas South Oak Cliff High School was arrested. Xavier Mayfield faces aggravated assault charges following an incident where he allegedly discharged an AR-15 rifle, wounding a teammate. The shooting reportedly occurred while Mayfield, the victim, and another teammate were reviewing game photos in a bedroom.
According to a police affidavit, Mayfield claimed the safety was engaged on the rifle, but it discharged unexpectedly, striking the unidentified victim. The circumstances surrounding gun ownership and why Mayfield was handling the weapon remain unclear. Dallas ISD has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
Dallas City Councilman Maxie Johnson described the shooting as an unfortunate accident, stating it does not detract from the students' accomplishments or future potential. South Oak Cliff High School is known for producing notable athletes, including NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman and several NFL players.
