Terror Plot Foiled: Camera Used to Target Ex-Officer

Two men, identified as Duffy and Reynolds, were found guilty of multiple terrorism-related offenses by Mrs. Justice Smyth at Belfast Crown Court. Their conviction stems from a meticulously planned operation aimed at gathering information to facilitate an attack on a retired police officer. The court determined that their actions went beyond simple information collection.

The defendants utilized a wildlife camera as a discreet and effective tool to monitor the retired officer's daily routines and movements. This surveillance was a critical component of a larger, well-researched scheme designed to collect intelligence necessary for an attempted assassination. The judge emphasized the grave nature of targeting a former police officer.

Although the planned attack was ultimately unsuccessful due to police intervention, the extent of the planning was significant. While the prosecution did not pursue attempted murder charges, the judge noted that several additional actions would have been required to complete the intended harm. Both men have been placed under a 30-year Terrorist Notification Act order.
