The parents of Braun Levi, an 18-year-old star high school tennis player, have initiated a $200 million wrongful death lawsuit. Levi was fatally struck by Jenia Resha Belt while crossing a street in Manhattan Beach, California, on May 4. Belt was allegedly driving with a blood alcohol content nearly double the legal limit and on a suspended license from a previous DUI arrest.
According to the suit, Belt had consumed excessive alcohol at a bar before driving. The lawsuit details her alleged "willful choice" to operate a vehicle while intoxicated at an unsafe speed, resulting in Levi's severe injuries and death. Authorities at the scene noted Belt smelled of alcohol and took her into custody for DUI.
This legal action follows Belt's prior DUI-related charges, which were resolved with a no-contest plea to misdemeanor hit and run, resulting in license suspension and probation. Levi's parents aim for accountability, prevention, and reform, with lawsuit proceeds supporting their foundation for scholarships and impaired driving awareness.
