On the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, police in Kanpur arrested Shivam Saxena, a tenant, for the brutal murder of 6-year-old Ayush Sonkar. Saxena had kidnapped Ayush, the son of a local mason, by promising to buy him a remote-controlled car. He then took the child to the Pandu river, where he strangled Ayush and disposed of the body on the riverbank.
When Ayush did not return home, his family reported him missing to the police. Reviewing CCTV footage, the police were able to track Saxena's movements and locate the crime scene. Authorities discovered that Saxena had been in frequent conflicts with Ayush's family. The body was sent for a post-mortem examination, and three teams were formed to search for the accused.
Late on Friday night, the police arrested Saxena near the Fatehpur crossing after an encounter. The accused sustained gunshot wounds in one of his legs and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. The kidnapping charge against Saxena has been amended to murder.
