- Fake notes were circulated in crowded markets, targeting unsuspecting shopkeepers.

A counterfeit currency manufacturing ring in Telangana has been dismantled by police, with the accused reportedly learning their methods from online video tutorials.
Police apprehended Bezawada Rajeev, 38, and his wife Durgam Pavani, 26, seizing a significant quantity of fake Rs 500 notes, a printer-scanner, and various other materials essential for producing counterfeit money. The couple established a small-scale operation from their residence, acquiring the technical knowledge necessary to print fake currency by viewing YouTube videos.
The fake notes were printed on high-quality bond paper, meticulously cut to size, and then introduced into circulation within crowded marketplaces and shops. Investigators noted that the gang specifically targeted busy commercial areas where quick transactions could obscure the detection of counterfeit currency, with elderly shopkeepers being among their preferred victims.
The operation was exposed after Avula Kiran, a milkman, received a counterfeit Rs 500 note and promptly reported it to the authorities. A dedicated police team traced and arrested the couple on June 15. During the raid, 15 fake notes totaling Rs 7,500 were recovered, along with printing equipment and other related items.
Investigations revealed that Rajeev has a substantial criminal history, including prior cases related to murder, attempted murder, and multiple counterfeit currency offenses across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. A rowdy sheet is also pending against him.
