24 Jan
Summary
- 300 dog carcasses found dumped in a pit in Jagtial district.
- Activists claim sarpanch ordered lethal injections for strays.
- FIR filed under animal cruelty and penal laws.

In the Jagtial district of Telangana, around 300 dog carcasses were found dumped in a pit, adding to a grim toll of nearly 900 stray dogs found dead in the state this month. This latest discovery occurred in Pegadapally, approximately 200 km from Hyderabad.
Animal rights activists allege the mass killings were orchestrated on the orders of the village sarpanch. Following a complaint by an activist from Stray Animal Foundation of India, police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the sarpanch and other gram panchayat officials. The FIR invokes sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
