Drug Supplier Freed Early After Teen's Death

Jay Conway, who supplied the Class A drug ecstasy to 16-year-old Lennix Hughes, resulting in her death at a party, has been released early from prison. Conway, who was 18 at the time of the incident in March 2023, was sentenced to 15 months in January of this year. However, he was reportedly released in late May under an early release scheme, having served only four months of his sentence.

The Scottish Prison Service confirmed Conway is no longer in custody. The tragic events unfolded at a house party in Dundee where Miss Hughes ingested multiple MDMA "bombs." Shortly after her arrival, she consumed the drugs and became critically unwell, experiencing convulsions before she stopped breathing.

In addition to the ecstasy supply charge, Conway also admitted to being involved in a "sophisticated operation" for dealing Class B cannabis over two months. A police raid on his property uncovered cash, scales, and grinders. Images and evidence of drug-dealing negotiations were found on his mobile phones, including a Telegram group chat.

During sentencing, the sheriff noted Miss Hughes's vulnerability as a 16-year-old and Conway's age at 18. The early release scheme, designed to alleviate prison overcrowding, allows short-term offenders to be freed after serving 50% of their sentence, with the prison population having recently reached an all-time high.
