Teenager Jailed for 16 Years Over Brutal Killing of Grandmother in Front of Child

In February 2024, a 16-year-old boy fatally stabbed a 70-year-old grandmother, Vyleen White, in a car park at Redbank Plains shopping center west of Brisbane. The shocking murder, witnessed by a young girl, was a catalyst for the Queensland government's controversial "adult crime, adult time" laws, which ensure juveniles face at least 20 years in custody for murder.

However, the teen, now 17, was sentenced under the state's previous laws after pleading guilty to the murder. Chief Justice Helen Bowskill described the boy's actions as "cowardly and callous," saying he not only took one life but "destroyed many others." The judge noted the teen's remorse and his decision to plead guilty, sparing Ms. White's family the trauma of a trial.

Ms. White's husband and three daughters wept as the sentencing was delivered. The grandmother had been married for 50 years and was a companion to her husband, helping him with his worsening eyesight. The teen, who cannot be legally identified, was also sentenced for car theft and other offenses. He will be released from detention in late 2033 after serving 60% of his 16-year sentence.
