An 18-year-old girl has died by suicide in Garhwa district, Jharkhand, following a decision by a village panchayat to ban her communication with her lover. Sita Kumari was found to have hanged herself in Gasedag village, the home of Arun Singh, 25, with whom she was in a relationship.
The tragic event followed a two-day-old panchayat meeting called by the girl's parents. This council had explicitly forbidden Sita and Arun, who is already married, from continuing their interactions. Despite the prohibition, the situation escalated dramatically.
Sita Kumari allegedly traveled to her lover's village and took her own life. Authorities have since arrested Arun Singh, and the body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the suicide are ongoing.
