A serious assault occurred at Glasgow's Clyde College when Kian O'Neill attacked a fellow student with a mallet. The incident, which took place in October 2023 on the Cardonald campus, stemmed from an escalating argument involving thrown sawdust. The victim sustained a significant brain injury, including a skull fracture and bruising, leading to seizures and temporary loss of arm function.
O'Neill, who was 16 at the time of the offense, admitted to the assault which caused severe injury and danger to life. The court heard how the victim lost consciousness and experienced seizures following the blows to his temple and hitting his head. He required prolonged medical treatment, including anti-seizure medication for approximately eight months.
At Glasgow Sheriff Court, the 18-year-old O'Neill was ordered to complete 225 hours of unpaid work. Sheriff Gerard Bonnar acknowledged the seriousness of the violence and its consequences but cited the spontaneous nature of the attack and O'Neill's lack of prior convictions as factors in opting against a custodial sentence.
