A 16-year-old student from Hamtramck, Michigan, was safely recovered after a frightening abduction on Monday, April 13. The incident began around 7 a.m. when an unknown man forced the girl into his car at gunpoint as she walked to her bus stop. Several students witnessed the abduction, and their use of social media and cell phone data was instrumental in helping authorities track the victim.
Thirty minutes later, the kidnapper stopped for gas in Detroit, approximately five miles away. He made the girl accompany him into a convenience store, instructing her to buy him cigarettes. At the counter, the teen discreetly mouthed "Help" to clerk Abdulrahman Abohatem, who recognized her distress. Abohatem bravely intervened, getting between the girl and her captor and escorting her to safety just as police arrived.
Hamtramck Police Chief Hussein Farhat emphasized the seriousness of the event, acknowledging the fear it instills in families. The recovered gun and the suspect's prior history of rape charges were noted by Mayor Adam Alharbi, who pledged that justice would be served. The suspect's arraignment was anticipated for Wednesday, April 15.
