A 15-year-old girl in Nagpur has found her voice and brought an end to five years of silent suffering. The abuse, which began around the age of 10 during the Covid pandemic, was perpetrated by a 50-year-old neighbor. He allegedly made obscene gestures, passed vulgar remarks, and issued threats, later stalking her on her way to school and tuition classes.
The girl initially viewed the familiar neighbor as an elderly "uncle," but fear and societal stigma likely contributed to her prolonged silence. A turning point arrived with a 'Police Didi, Police Kaka' awareness program conducted at her school. This initiative educates children about sexual predators and promotes discussions on 'good touch, bad touch' and sexual harassment.
Empowered by the program, the now 15-year-old approached her headmaster to disclose the years of harassment. The headmaster immediately alerted the authorities. Subsequently, her grandmother lodged a formal complaint, resulting in the arrest of the accused neighbor.
