Summary
- Teen driver jailed for three years for filming boyfriend before fatal crash.
- Boyfriend died from chest injuries despite attempts to save him.
- Driver had passed her test but only bought the car a month prior.

A teenage driver, Mia Howarth, was sentenced to three years in prison for causing the death of her boyfriend, Alfie Lovett, in a crash on September 12, 2023. Howarth, then 18, was driving at 35mph on her phone, filming Lovett hanging out of the passenger window, when her car left the road near Brimham Rocks in North Yorkshire. Lovett, 17, sustained fatal chest injuries.
Lovett's parents spoke of their devastation, noting their 12-week-old grandson was left behind. Howarth expressed remorse, admitting fault at the scene. Despite warnings from her father about passenger behaviour, she continued driving while filming. She had obtained her driving license the previous year and had only purchased the car a month before the incident.
Sentencing Howarth, the judge highlighted the dangers of using mobile phones while driving and noted the profound grief caused. Considering her age at the time, good character, and the time elapsed, she received a three-year sentence and a driving ban of six years and six months.
