A teen driver, aged 14, has been sentenced to serve time in custody for a severe crash that occurred on May 5, 2026. The incident involved a stolen SUV and a head-on collision with a van driven by 82-year-old Doug Bremner. The collision ignited Bremner's van, trapping him inside.
Bremner sustained critical injuries, including severe burns and multiple fractures, requiring an airlift to a hospital in Edmonton where he underwent extensive treatment. The teen, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was also facing a separate charge for assaulting a youth worker in December 2025.
During sentencing arguments, the Crown sought a custodial sentence, citing the youth's struggles with substance abuse and inability to manage himself in the community. The defense argued for probation. Judge Lisa Watson opted for a custodial sentence, emphasizing its role in providing structure for rehabilitation and ensuring public safety.
The judge sentenced the teen to a total of 300 days in custody, including 200 days in secure custody and 100 days under community supervision, followed by 12 months of probation. This is in addition to the five months he had already spent in custody since his arrest.
