Australian authorities have announced charges against two men accused of involvement in the TeamPCP cybercrime syndicate. The syndicate is alleged to have compromised thousands of businesses worldwide by inserting malicious code into popular open-source software tools.
This operation, a joint effort with the FBI, began in April following intelligence from cybersecurity firms. The malicious code potentially impacted over 1,000 organizations, leading to the theft of more than 500,000 credentials and over 300 gigabytes of sensitive data.
Some of the compromised businesses were later subjected to extortion attempts. FBI Cyber Division Assistant Director Brett Leatherman commended the collaboration, emphasizing the ongoing effort to combat software supply-chain attacks.
