An innocent elementary school teacher, Dominic Evans, has been subjected to intense online scrutiny and false accusations regarding the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie. Despite law enforcement ruling out the Guthrie family as suspects and not naming Evans as involved, internet sleuths have targeted him. They fixated on a past minor arrest and a grainy image from security footage, comparing his features to a masked figure.
Evans shared with The New York Times the severe distress caused by these baseless allegations. He described feeling as though his identity had been stolen and questioned the motives behind such harmful online speculation. The teacher, who has minimal past interaction with Nancy Guthrie, explained that he only learned of the situation when his wife saw an Instagram post. He also noted that a SWAT team deployment unrelated to Guthrie's case caused further fear for his family's safety.
Sheriff Chris Nanos acknowledged Evans's ordeal, suggesting legal action against those spreading libel. The family of Savannah Guthrie is offering up to $1 million for information leading to Nancy Guthrie's recovery. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the FBI or the Pima County Sheriff's Office.
