A tuition teacher, Subhash Kumar, 57, received an 18-year rigorous imprisonment sentence for sexually assaulting a student. The Thiruvananthapuram Fast Track Special Court also imposed a fine of ₹35,000, with additional jail time for non-payment. The abuse took place between 2013 and January 2014, when the survivor was in 5th and 6th grade.
The survivor suffered severe mental health issues, including anxiety and panic disorders, which led to social withdrawal and a year lost in her Plus Two studies. Despite online psychiatric treatment, she could not disclose the abuse due to her mother's constant presence.
The turning point arrived in 2024 when, after moving into a hostel for her MBBS studies, she encountered a person strongly resembling her abuser. This triggered a severe mental breakdown, during which she finally confided in a doctor about the suppressed trauma. The doctor subsequently alerted the police, leading to the accused's arrest and the eventual sentencing.
