Swift Concert Terror Plot Trial Begins in Austria
28 Apr
Summary
- Trial started for man accused of plotting terror attack at Taylor Swift concert.
- Defendant allegedly planned to kill fans with knives or bombs.
- US intelligence aided Austria in canceling the planned concerts.

The trial for a 21-year-old Austrian citizen, Beran A., began recently in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, for his alleged involvement in a thwarted terror plot targeting Taylor Swift's concerts in August 2024. Prosecutors contend that Beran A. planned to attack up to 30,000 onlookers outside the Ernst Happel Stadium with knives or explosives, aiming to maximize casualties. This alleged plot led Austrian authorities to cancel Swift's three performances, a decision supported by US intelligence, which caused significant disappointment among fans.
Beran A. is also charged with membership in a terrorist organization, with prosecutors stating he networked with Islamic State members, discussed acquiring weapons, and swore allegiance to the group. Authorities discovered bomb-making materials at his home on August 7, 2024, just before the concerts were scheduled to begin. His lawyer indicated he plans to plead guilty to most charges. The trial, which is drawing comparisons to the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing, is expected to continue until May 12, 2026.
